A School for Sound

Fall 2019 | Professor Sam Ghantous

In a singular structure, exists a both highly public program of performance and a private residential program for students and faculty. These programmatic needs are distinguished between solid and void. Public and private programmatic needs define the form of the structure, allowing the two to alternate, carving into each other, creating an ideal space for a performance school.

Design

My favorite part of the brainstorming process was creating hand-sewn, casted, and printed conceptual models that explored a variety of themes. While the building is primarily designed in section with a heavy emphasis on privacy as a solid and performance as a void, elements intersect in plan such as a public stairway which sews its way between the floors. Looking closely at the sections or plans, the various programs can be seen illustrated in the unique profile.
